Wave light up the Comets in Home opener
MILWAUKEE (November 26, 2010)— The Milwaukee Wave winners of the 09-10 regular season title before falling in the finals to the La Raza de Monterrey, coming into the new 2010-2011 season coach Tozer and the team have high expectations, with a opening season victory over the same Comets team in Missouri November 12th.
With all the fan fair of a season opener Owner Jim Lindenberg started the festivities by presenting Goal Keeper of the year Nick Vorberg his award.
The action got off to a fast start as the wave attacked right away with less then 2 minutes gone McNealy scores the 1st score on a put backer over the left shoulder of the Comets keeper for a quick 2-0 lead.with 11:28 in the match Ryan Mack slides in front of the net and puts a left foot on the ball and into the goal for a 4-0 Wave lead in the 1st period.
With 1:49 left in the 1st period on a line change for the Wave Matt Stewart gets a rocket of a right foot to go in from dead center of the box to increase the lead to 6-0 at the end of the 1st period.
To begin the 2nd the waves Marco Terminesi nails a left foot into the goal to make the score 9-0 with a 3 point rocket from the left hand arch. The comets countered with a 2 point shot from inside the box by Brian Harris to make it 9-2 .
The Comets strike again with 1:05 left before the half with a shot by Beasley but the wave counter with a goal :11 seconds later to make the score 11-4 by Hewerton Morieira and that’s how the half ended.
The Wave started the 3rd weriod with a goal by Kyle lance 3 minute into the period to make the score 13-4. With 12:02 to play the Comets give up a 2 minute powerplay with too many men on the field, and the Wave capitalized on it with a goal by Giuliano Oliviero as he hits it off Missouri Comet JoseBirche into the goal for 2 putting the Wave up 15-4, but the Comets counter four seconds later with a goal by Byron Alvarez to make it 15-6 with 9:13 left in the 3rd. The Wave get nailed ith a Troy Dusosky foul to put them a man down for two minutes. The wave were ultra aggressive on the powerplay taking 2 more shots on goal then the Comets and were able to burn the man dis-advantage.
With still 4:15 left in the 3rd the wave scored again to make it 17-6 on a score by Giuliano Oliviero then Matt Stewart scores with 1;18 in the period to make it 19-6 and that’s how the 3rd period would end.
The 4th period started out fast and nasty, fist’s flying but with 10:12 left in the period Gibson steals the ball and launches it over Nick’s head for a score, one in which Nick is very upset at his defender Marcio Leite for the mistake. Then they come right back again with 7:08 left in the period with a goal by Tiguinho to make it 19-11. at 5:04 in the final period the Comets bring on their sixth attacker…but unfortunately an unassisted 3 point goal by Evan McNeley makes the score 22-11 with 2:00 left then Travis MacKenzie scores another 2 point goal with 1:11 left and the Comets decided to bring their goal keeper back in but to no avail the wave win 24-11 to open the season 2-0 with both victories over the comets.
The Wave will play the Chicago Riot next at home at 7:00 p.m. at the US Cellular arena.
