Serena Williams moved out of the first round with a 6-3, 6-1 win
over Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic at Wimbledon on Saturday (July 28).
Meanwhile, first-time Olympians Ryan Harrison, Christina McHale and
Donald Young were eliminated from singles play. John Isner, also an
Olympic rookie, advanced with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory over Belgium’s
Olivier Rochus. Isner and Andy Roddick lost their opening doubles
match against Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares of Brazil, 6-2, 6-4.
The other U.S. men’s team, top-seeded Bob and Mike Bryan, edged
Brazilians Thomaz Bellucci and Andre Sa 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-3.
