Prunty Edges Bennett To Capture Ewald/Miss Slinger 60
Dennis Prunty continued his hot streak by holding off Lowell Bennett to take the checkers in the Ewald of Hartford/Miss Slinger Pageant 60 at the Slinger Super Speedway. Prunty, who has won three of the last four features at Slinger, celebrated his birthday in style.
“Hold on, I don’t want too much credit,” said Prunty in Victory Lane. “I started in the second row and Lowell Bennett started from the back and he was coming hard. I guess it’s going to be a show all season long.”
Mike Egan and Randy Schuler led the field to the green flag with Egan getting the early advantage. Egan cleared Schuler on lap 2 and would hold the lead until lap 34. Meanwhile, Prunty and Conrad Morgan ran the outside groove towards the front.
Morgan used the outside to his advantage and methodically ran down Egan. However, just after Morgan passed Egan on the high side going into turn one, his night would come to a premature end. Morgan apparently thought he had cleared Egan coming off of turn two, but came down a tad too soon. There was just enough contact from Egan to cause Morgan to spin bringing out the race’s only caution.
“Morgan thought he had me cleared and came down just enough,” said Egan. “I barely touched him, I got on the brakes, but there isn’t even a mark on my car.”
The subsequent restart had Prunty getting the jump on Egan from the outside and slowly pulling away to a comfortable lead. Meanwhile, Bennett, who had to start behind the invert due to winning last week’s feature event, worked his way up to third all on the outside. However, Bennett’s march to the front was delayed as he seemingly had a hard time getting around Egan.
“Egan wasn’t quite giving me a lane either way,” said Bennett. “They finally gave him the one lane sign and he finally kept it down. Just had to work a little bit at it.”
Once Bennett finally cleared Egan to take over second place, he set his sights on Prunty. However, Bennett would run out of laps and have to settle for second place.
“I’m never disappointed with second place,” said Bennett. “I’ll take that. That’s no problem. We had a pretty good race car and we were coming pretty good at the end and no complaints.”
Prunty, for his part said he was merely on cruise control towards the end.
“We finished right where we like to finish,” said Prunty. “I worked for it tonight. When you start up front you should have an advantage as long as you’re not on the outside too long. I was just taking it easy, saving the tires.”
Apparently he saved them enough to hold onto the win and close the gap in points down to a mere eight.
Mike Egan held onto third, while Randy Schuler and Scott Schoeni rounded out the top five.
Wayne Freimund captured his first late model victory at Slinger in over 10 years by holding off Rob Braun.
“Hard-fought, man. I gave up the inside and then he gave it up for me,” said Freimund.
Freimund was referring to the battle he had with Steven Schulz as the two traded the lead with aggressive inside/outside moves.
Freimund would take the early lead from his outside pole starting position, until he began to feel the pressure from Schulz. Schulz would duck underneath Freimund in turn 2 on lap 17 to take over the lead. Just three laps later, Freimund would duck back underneath Schulz in the same spot to retake the lead. Schulz would then take the high side and draw back to even with Freimund.
Schulz would clip the wall with the rear of his car coming off of turn four on lap 27 and got the car completely sideways before saving it at the end of the straightaway. That dropped Schulz back to fifth spot and allowed Rob Braun to take up the chase on Freimund.
However, Freimund was able to maintain his slight advantage and hold off Braun for the victory. Steve Apel came home in third place, while the Soup Nazi Jacob Vanoskey and Steven Schulz would finish in fourth and fifth place respectively.
James Swan continued his dominance in the Midwest Sportsman division by racking up his second win of the season. Along with his two wins, Swan’s lowest finish has been third place in the six events thus far.
This week’s win was total domination as Swan would vault to the lead by lap 10, and stretch his lead to almost half a lap.
Tom Elsinger would get the early lead from his outside front row starting position and lead the first 10 laps. James Swan would work his way to the front on the outside and easily clear Elsinger and stretch his lead to a comfortable margin.
The race’s only real battle was for second place, as Elsinger and Andy Haver would battle side by side for most of the race. Haver would take the spot on lap 23, and take the checkers in second place. However, in the post race inspection, Haver was disqualified for an unspecified tech infraction, allowing Elsinger to inherit second place, while Brian Holtz would take third. Gregg Pawelske would wind up in fourth, with Jay Shambeau in fifth.
Eric Lingford backed up his pole in qualifying by capturing the Thunderstock feature. Lingford used the high side to his advantage and easily worked his way to the front. Lingford took the checkers over Al Stippich by a little over a second. Andy Welter would come home in third place, while Ryan Farrell and Jake Larson would round out the top five.
Alex Prunty kept the winning evening in the family by capturing his second straight feature win in the 4 cylinder Slinger Bees division. Prunty, who started mid pack in a field of twenty cars, took advantage of a restart and cruised to an easy win. Nick Wagner was the runner up, while defending track champion Joe Lang would finish third. Erik Long continued his consistency placing fourth, while Russ Lorbiecki rounded out the top five.
Dan Dewey would take the win in the Speedway Guest cars.
Peter Breis would capture the Spectator Eliminator victory.
The Figure 8 Division would find defending track champion Scott Goetzke claiming his second straight feature win by holding off Shane “The Shark” Becker. Willy Van Camp would end up in third place, while Jeff Wohlrabe and Justin Poenitsch would round out the top five.
Finally, in what was perhaps the most anticipated event of the evening, Ashley Hoffman defended her crown, by being voted Miss Slinger Super Speedway for the 2010 season.
